College and Career Plans
I am enrolled at the University of Southern Indiana with a declared major in civil engineering and a hope to minor in environmental biology. In college, I am looking forward to making new lifelong friends and perhaps even meeting a future spouse.
My career goal is to be a successful environmental civil engineer and have the ability to go on mission trips to help third world countries. My engineering education and experience will be used to help other people obtain fresh water. It has been a goal of mine for a few years to build wells in underprivileged countries. I want to help the people that have to travel miles in order to get water for their families. My goal of being an engineer has resulted from my love of building and my strength in the math and sciences. My dad and I work on many wood projects in his garage. We have built a chicken coop, two rabbit hutches, an indoor mini aviary, multiple desks, a mini chicken coop, and many other miscellaneous projects. I feel as though my life purpose involves protecting the environment and its inhabitants. On a more personal note, I would love to rescue dogs and other animals. I have a passion for animals so I will have as many pets as I can provide love and care for.
I don’t think my plans for life are unattainable. I just hope to be happy with my family, job, and community. I am not a needy person so I do not need material possessions to be happy.

Scholarship Application Example
Why do you believe you should be awarded this scholarship?
I am a strong candidate for the James A. Torres Memorial Scholarship because I am hardworking, intelligent, and passionate. Also, I have a twin sister so our family will be paying for two college educations at the same time.
While participating in extra-curricular activities and up to three varsity sports, I have maintained a 4.0 grade point average through hard work, prioritizing, and focus. I challenged myself to take honors and advanced placement courses beginning freshmen year. Another character trait is my passion. When I commit to something, I commit wholeheartedly. I am excited to start my college education and plan to do so at the University of Southern Indiana.
I am blessed to have a twin sister! This blessing also means that our family has two daughters starting college this year. (My brother will be starting high school.) Hannah, my twin sister, is pursuing church work, which requires attendance at an out-of-state expensive college. My father works for a church, and my mother works for a nonprofit. We have a great family, but we are not rich in worldly goods. Paying for my college education is my responsibility, and I hope to pay for my education using scholarship help. The high school classes I have taken and my extra-curricular activities have prepared me for my scholarship applications and college. I also work each summer to save money for college, but my wages will certainly not cover college expenses.
I would like to be considered for this scholarship because I do not know how I will finance my college education, but I know that I want to continue to learn, grow, and make a positive contribution to society.
